KAPOLEI, HI (March 13, 2019) — In celebration of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole's birth month and in conjunction with the Prince Kūhiō Festival and Kanaeokana's ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi campaign, Ka Makana Ali‘i will host free 'Ōlelo Hawai'i classes with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. These free Hawaiian language classes will be taught by Kumu Makalapua Cassion-Fisher at Center Court every Tuesday night in March from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The United Nations declared 2019 The Year of Indigenous Languages in order to raise awareness of these languages, not only to benefit the people who speak them but also for others to appreciate the important contribution they make to our world’s rich cultural diversity.
In Hawaiian, Ka Makana Ali‘i means "The Royal Gift," which pays tribute to Prince Kūhiō who developed the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act designating hundreds of thousands of acres of government land to be set aside to assist native Hawaiians. The permanent homeland that Ka Makana Ali‘i sits on is a perpetual gift and legacy that lives on today.
In partnership with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, Prince Kūhiō Civic Club and Hawaiian Music Live, Ka Makana Ali‘i will honor Prince Kūhiō on Saturday, March 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. with hula halau, local musicians and a kahili exhibit. Local personality Shannon Scott will emcee the program with music by Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winners Hoku Zuttermeister and Del Beazley and hula by Nā Lei Ka ‘Iwa Ha‘a I Ka Lani. Hawaiian artist Brooke Parker will also unveil a new artwork of Prince Kūhiō.
Nā Lei Ka ‘Iwa Ha‘a I Ka Lani’s Kumu Tati and her ʻohana are proud residents of the Hawaiian Homestead Community in Kānehili, located across the street from Ka Makana Aliʻi. Many of the hālau members are also beneficiaries of Prince Kūhiō’s legacy as homesteaders from various communities from around Oʻahu, from the original Hawaiian homestead of Papakōlea, to Waiʻanae, Nānākuli and Kapolei. They are dedicating this performance to Prince Kūhiō and remain forever grateful to the people’s Prince.
