Ka Makana Ali‘i Honors Hale Kipa With $1 Million Donation

KAPOLEI, HI (November 22, 2017) – In the spirit of the holidays, Ka Makana Ali‘i honored a community organization focused on reaching at-risk youth. For more than 46 years, Hale Kipa has served over 70,000 youth who may have otherwise gone without help through outreach, independent living skills, therapeutic counseling, foster care and prevention programs.

“DeBartolo Development has a long legacy of giving back to the local community, especially our keiki, who have always been near and dear to the hearts of the DeBartolo ‘ohana,” said Rich Hartline, vice president of development at DeBartolo Development. “Ka Makana Ali‘i would not be here without the support of the people of West O‘ahu, and that’s why we are very excited to be teaming up with our support of Hale Kipa.”

DeBartolo Development and Ka Makana Ali‘i presented a $1 million check to Hale Kipa, an organization that provides opportunities and environments that strengthen and encourage youth, their families and communities to actualize their potential and social responsibility.

“Ka Makana Ali‘i’s pledge to Hale Kipa was instrumental in creating positive momentum for our campaign at a critical time,” said Chris Benjamin, President & CEO at Alexander & Baldwin and the Capital Campaign Chair for Hale Kipa. “With the center’s pledge, we were able to secure significant gifts from major foundations, generous individuals and other corporations, and are now positioned to break ground on a new campus for Hale Kipa in the very near future.”

“This gift will go a long way to provide our youth with the care, experience, and opportunities they need to pursue a healthy, productive and happy life,” said Punky Pletan-Cross, chief executive officer of Hale Kipa.

Hale Kipa continues to be a leader in providing services to at-risk youth due to their long- standing expertise in the areas of outreach family counseling, emergency shelter, residential

treatment, foster care and independent living; their flexibility to individualize placement and services; their strong and effective working partnerships; and their collaboration with other community agencies.
