Ka Makana Ali‘i Hosted Draft Day and Football Camp with Pro Football Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Jerry Rice
This weekend, 200 keiki participated in the free camp featuring three-time Super Bowl champion Jerry Rice, led by Kapolei High School Coach Darren Hernandez and his coaching staff
KAPOLEI, HI (June 25, 2022) — On Saturday, June 25, Ka Makana Ali‘i hosted a Football Camp featuring Pro Football Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Jerry Rice. The free camp ran from 9 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army Kroc Center and trained 200 keiki ages 7 through 14 about fundamentals and sportsmanship.
“Our camp today was so incredible! Jerry Rice, Kapolei High School Coach Darren Hernandez and all the players had a great time and the kids learned so much,” said Ka Makana Ali‘i general manager Stephanie England. “This camp came about as a way for Ka Makana Ali‘i to give back to our community; a community who has given us so much and whose support sustained the Center through COVID. As Jerry mentioned last night at the Center, COVID caused us all to take stock, to stop and enjoy the small things. His wish was that everyone have a good time and boy, did we! Thank you to all of our participants and their ‘ohana and our partners who made this happen. We could not have done it without the Kapolei High School Hurricanes Football Program, Coach Darren Hernandez, Francine Aki, the Salvation Army Kroc Center, DeBartolo Development, Moani Island Bistro, Foodland Farms and, of course, Jerry Rice.”
Throughout the Football Camp, keiki worked with an expert team of coaches in a high-energy, positive environment. With a focus on skill development, all activities were designed so that each student can participate regardless of current skill set, position, or playing experience. Kapolei High School Coach Darren Hernandez and his coaches led keiki through a brief warm-up and then split them into groups to rotate through drill stations. Three-time Super Bowl champion Rice stopped at each station to give keiki tips and encourage them to work hard and have fun.
The Center for West O‘ahu also hosted Draft Day with Jerry Rice in Center Court on Friday, June 24 from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Halau Hula ‘O Hokulani welcomed Rice to the Center with a special performance. Rice called up six keiki “Draft Picks” to the stage before he participated in a Q&A session. The event ended with a concert by the Mākaha Sons.
Rice is widely regarded as the best wide receiver to ever play in the National Football League, and arguably the greatest player of all time. During his 15-year career with the San Francisco 49ers, Rice won three Super Bowls (Super Bowl XXIII (’88), Super Bowl XXIV (’89) and SB XXIX (’94)) and one Super Bowl MVP. He enjoyed three seasons with the Oakland Raiders, including a Super Bowl appearance, and one season with the Seattle Seahawks before retiring in 2005. Rice was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in January 2010, his first year of eligibility.
This event was made possible because of the generous support of sponsors and partners: Ka Makana Ali‘i, DeBartolo Development, Jerry Rice, Kapolei High School Coach Darren Hernandez, NIKE, and Kroc Center Hawaii.
