In partnership with Bricks 4 Kidz West O‘ahu and the Hawaii LEGO® Users Group,
Ka Makana Ali‘i will host stop motion animation workshops and LEGO® Labs this month

KAPOLEI, HI (March 8, 2019) — Ka Makana Ali‘i, in partnership with Bricks 4 Kidz West O‘ahu and the Hawaii LEGO® Users Group, is excited to present a series of workshops, LEGO® Labs and the Center’s first-ever Shootz! Stop Motion Animation Film Festival. The community is invited to a viewing party and awards ceremony at the Center on Saturday, April 6 at 5 p.m.

The festival invites innovative local students from ages 6 to 14 years to compete. Participation in the Shootz! Stop Motion Animation Film Festival is free. Student teams may submit up to three entries each. The animated short films must be submitted online between Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. and Saturday, March 30 at 4 p.m. The People’s Choice Award will be earned by the animated short with the most likes.

“We are so excited to introduce the art of cinematic storytelling to young people in a fun and collaborative environment,” said Kelly Kauinana, marketing director at Ka Makana Ali‘i. “It is our hope that the student projects spark curiosity and ignite their imaginations.”

The contest will be divided by age groups: 6 to 8 years, 9 to 11 years and 12 to 14 years. Judging will be based on the following categories: Creativity; Best Storytelling; Best Use of Sound; Best Cinematography and the coveted People’s Choice Award. LEGO® prizes will be awarded in each age group, with the grand prize as a Nikon D3300 DSLR stop motion camera for the People’s Choice Award winner. For a complete list of festival rules, visit www.kamakanaalii.com.

To introduce students to techniques needed to create animations or to help them perfect their film shorts, Bricks 4 Kidz West O‘ahu will be hosting Stop Motion Animation Workshops at the LEGO® Lab at Ka Makana Ali‘i on Saturdays, March 9, 16 and 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Each session can accommodate up to 20 teams of students, ranging from one to three students per team. Cost is $30 per student for all three workshops. Register online at https://bit.ly/2XDkkuf.

Bricks 4 Kidz West O‘ahu will offer additional LEGO® Lab hours for enrolled workshop students to complete their films during spring break, between March 18 and 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at a discounted rate of $5 per hour.

Stop motion animation is a filmmaking technique that makes inanimate objects appear to move on their own. To create the effect, an item is placed in front of a camera and a photo is snapped. The item is then moved slightly and another photo is taken. This process is repeated a number of times, then the sequence of photos is played back in rapid progression, and the object appears to move fluidly across the screen.
