Ka Makana Ali'i Welcomes Taqueria el Ranchero to the Center for West O‘ahu

The popular Mexican street food eatery will open its second location in early 2021

KAPOLEI, HI (July 30, 2020) — Ka Makana Ali‘i announces it has signed a lease agreement with Taqueria el Ranchero at the Center for West O‘ahu. Taqueria el Ranchero will open in early 2021 in the ‘Ōlino theatre wing of Ka Makana Ali‘i offering a true Mexican taqueria experience featuring bold flavors, quality ingredients, authentic dishes, efficient service and affordable prices. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant will have an area for takeout, a dine-in space with a full-service bar and outdoor seating.

“Taqueria el Ranchero will be a dynamic culinary addition to Ka Makana Ali‘i,” said Stephanie England, general manager of the Center. “We welcome this unique taqueria to the Center and we believe our community will enjoy exploring all the exciting flavors the menu offers.”

Taqueria el Ranchero opened its first location in Wahiawa in May 2015 with customers coming from all over the island for its authentic Mexican street food. When owner Hector Garcia Gomez saw an opportunity to open a second location in West O‘ahu, he took it. Garcia grew up on a ranch in Mexico — inspiring the name Taqueria el Ranchero — and in San Francisco before joining the military. At 21 years old, Garcia — who had never been out of San Francisco or Mexico — was stationed in Wahiawa. It was then he discovered that there were no taquerias on the island. After another move, Garcia came back to Hawaii in 2014 with more resources and experience, and decided to open his own taqueria.

“I started the restaurant because I needed food from back home. Everything on the menu is street food that I like to eat,” said Garcia. “I can’t wait to bring my authentic Mexican taqueria to Ka Makana Ali‘i. Many of my customers are already excited for this second location and I cannot wait to serve this great community.”

Taqueria el Ranchero specializes in simple Mexican street food like tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos, along with weekend specials like pozole (pork soup), menudo (tripe soup) and chile rellenos. All of the offerings are fresh, preservative-free and affordable. Because the Ka Makana Ali‘i location will have a larger kitchen, Garcia hopes to create more combination plates to expand his current menu.  

The Ka Makana Ali‘i location will be open daily and plans on serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
